Facing fear head on

“Never make big decisions based out of a response to fear” was one of the pieces of advice given to me one day that has made the biggest impact on my decision-making.

It’s often hard to know what we want in life; it seems that in this world where change seems to be more the norm; life is about making bigger & bigger decisions on a fairly frequent basis:

  • Should I accept that career step?

  • Should I invest in that relationship?

  • Should I move there?

  • Should I give up my job?

  • Should I stay in my job?

  • Should I go back to work?

Fear can paralyse us from making decisions.

  • Fear of the future

  • Fear of failure

  • Fear of missing out

  • Fear of making the wrong decision

How can I make decisions without fear paralysing me?

8 steps to busting fear off your decisions:

1. Write down the pros & cons (obvious, I know, but getting them down ON PAPER really helps to see what you think they are).

  • Which of the pros & cons are true & which ones are not true (feelings are not evidence of truth)?

  • Which of the pros & cons are based in fear (ie a fearful future outcome based on feelings not based in fact)?

2. If I didn’t have those fears what decision would I make?

3. If I knew I couldn’t fail, what decision would I make?

4. What's the worst thing that could happen?

  • Am I ok with that?

  • Is it worth the risk?

5. What's the best thing that could happen?

  • Would I regret not knowing?

  • Am I prepared to take that risk?

6. Imagine a trusted friend: what advice would they give you?

7. What advice would you give to someone facing the same decision?

8. Imagine yourself 3 months/1 year after making that decision, what are you relieved/glad/disappointed about?

Let all of the above allow you to see which particular direction you are now leaning towards.

Remember that you are made to be a powerful person who can make good decisions; not making a decision gives control of the decision making to something/someone else as eventually that decision will be made, whether through the passing of time or through the option passing by.

Making decisions strengthens your decision-making the next time.

Finally, don't allow fear to dictate the outcome of your future.
